Dr. Joel Abbott is a board-certified urologist specialized in endourology and minimally invasive surgical techniques, including robotics, laparoscopy and advanced kidney stone care. He completed a specialized Endourology/Laparoscopic fellowship at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine.Dr. Abbott is primarily focused on management of patients with kidney stones, particularly large/complex kidney stones. He previously served as the associate director of Chesapeake Urology’s Advanced Kidney Stone program and the University of Maryland Clinical Fellowship in Advanced Endourology.He received his medicine degree from Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, CA and completed his Transitional and General Surgery Internship at West Virginia University, Charleston Area Medical Center. Dr. Abbott completed his residency in Urologic Surgery at Michigan State University, St. John Providence in Detroit, where he served as Chief Resident three consecutive years.Dr. Abbott has received numerous awards and recognitions for his work, including the ACOS Surgeon’s Erwin Literary Award, the MOA Scientific Research Award, the AUA Dr. Edwin L. Thirlby Award, the ACOS Resident Achievement Award, the Mark Cummings, Ph.D. Award for Outstanding Leadership in Medical Scholarship, and the AOF Outstanding Resident of the Year. As a former enlisted active duty Marine, he also earned the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for professional and leadership achievement.Dr. Abbott’s work has been published in numerous textbooks and prestigious medical journals including the Journal of Urology, Journal of Endourology, Smith’s Textbook of Endourology, and The Canadian Journal of Urology. He has given countless presentations in local, regional, national, and international arenas on his research and work in the minimally invasive treatment of large and complex kidney stones and kidney stone prevention. In addition, he serves as a content reviewer for the Journal of Urology and Urology Practice, Journal of Endourology, and World Journal of Urology.
