Learning Objectives:

  • Differentiate the clinical presentations, diagnostic approaches, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) findings associated with meningitis, encephalitis, brain abscess, and acute flaccid myelitis.
  • Formulate evidence-based initial empiric antimicrobial treatment regimens for bacterial meningitis and encephalitis, and recognize when additional or alternative therapies are indicated (e.g., antivirals, steroids).
  • Identify key imaging and laboratory findings that distinguish brain abscess and acute flaccid myelitis from other CNS infections, and recognize indications for neurosurgical intervention or specialist referral.

Patrick J. Kenney, D.O., F.A.C.O.I. Vice Chair, Department of Infectious Diseases, Cleveland Clinic Florida has been in clinical practice since 2013. Dr. Kenney completed his internal medicine training at Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, FL and his fellowhip in infectious diseases at Morsani College of Medicine at the University of South Florida in Tampa, FL. He is the newly appointed program director for the Infectious Disease fellowship program at the Cleveland Clinic Florida in Weston, FL. Dr. Kenney cares for patients across all aspects of the specialty in both the inpatient and outpatient setting. He is clinical adjunct faculty at Florida Atlantic University Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine, Ross University College of Medicine, Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine at Nova Southeastern University, and St. George's University College of Medicine. His clincal interests include virology particularly HIV as well as transplant infectious diseases.
