ACOI 2026 Annual Conference

Asthma Today: Diagnosis, Phenotypes, and Precision Treatment in 2026

Learning Objectives:

  • By the end of this activity, participants will be able to: Differentiate asthma from common pulmonary and nonpulmonary causes of dyspnea by applying clinical history, physical examination, spirometry, and appropriate diagnostic testing.
  • Classify patients with asthma according to relevant clinical phenotypes and inflammatory endotypes using clinical characteristics, biomarkers, pulmonary function testing, and treatment response.
  • Assess patients with difficult to treat or severe asthma by identifying uncontrolled disease, modifiable factors, comorbid conditions, and features that warrant referral for specialized evaluation. Select appropriate biologic therapy for patients with severe asthma by integrating exacerbation history, biomarkers, phenotype, endotype, comorbidities, prior treatment response, and patient preferences. Develop an individualized strategy to achieve and maintain asthma control by addressing inhaler technique, adherence, environmental and comorbid factors, pharmacologic therapy, objective monitoring, and timely reassessment.
