Robert J. Fontana, MD

Dr. Fontana is a Professor of Medicine and Director of the Transplant Hepatology Fellowship training program and Network Strategy in the Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology at the University of Michigan. Over the past 2 decades, he has been a lead investigator in several, multicenter registry studies exploring the etiologies and outcomes of patients with acute liver failure, idiosyncratic DILI and viral hepatitis. He is a well recognized regional and national expert in the management of patients with cirrhosis and decompensated liver disease in his role as Medical Director of Liver Transplantation at U of M thru 2022. He has conducted studies on the use of serum biomarkers and liver elastography to identify patients with advanced fibrosis. He is now conducting studies on use of medications and endobariatrics to treat patients with MASLD. He is currently an executive member of the AASLD MASLD Special Interest group and an invited speaker on how to diagnose and treat patients with MASLD.
