Doxycycline ("DoxyPEP") has been approved by the CDC for post-exposure prophylaxis for certain populations. In Florida, the doxyPEP guidelines that I developed are inclusive of all populations. Since approval, doxyPEP has generated a lot of conversation and debate, including questionable future antibiotic resistance, changes in gut microbiome, side effect profile, use in women, and more. These will all be explored and discussed during my presentation.

Andrea Sciberras, Statewide Medical Director, DO, AAHIVS, FACOI, FACP

Dr. Sciberras is a 2003 Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine graduate. She completed her residency training in internal medicine at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York. Throughout the years, Dr. Sciberras has served in many different roles, including associate professor, residency program director, and medical director. She also ran her own private practice, which primarily served the HIV community. She is well known for her caring and compassionate attitude, her diagnostic acumen, and her work in the public health sector.

Dr. Sciberras began working for the Florida Department of Health as the Statewide Medical Director for the Division of Disease Control and Health Protection in August of 2022. She wears many hats in her role, and since that time, she has overseen and grown the statewide telehealth program for HIV and STD care including PreP, PEP, and Test & Treat services. Some of her other accomplishments include developing and implementing FDOH’s unique policy regarding DoxyPEP, as well as new policies for the testing of Mycoplasma genitalium and Trichomonas vaginalis. Finally, she continues to develop and employ best practices to combat the congenital syphilis epidemic here in Florida. When not at work, you will find her at the beach stocking up on her vitamin D!
