Hemorrhagic Fevers and Fevers of Unknown Origin (2023)
Overview
In this session, you’ll:
- Viral hemorrhagic fevers (VHF) encompass a wide variety of diseases with many capable of causing outbreaks and are associated with high morbidity and mortality, and there are currently no specific therapies available.
- That viruses implicated in viral hemorrhagic fevers and the diseases they cause are grouped by the family of viruses: Arenaviridae (Lassa virus), Bunyaviridae (Crimean Congo virus, Rift Valley Fever virus, Sin Nobre virus, Filoviridae (Ebola virus, Marburg virus), and Flaviviridae (Dengue virus, Yellow Fever virus).
- That fevers of unknown origin (FUO) are defined as fever higher than 38.3ºC on several occasions lasting for at least three (some use two) weeks without an established etiology despite intensive evaluation and diagnostic testing.

- Recognize that bacterial meningitis is a medical emergency and the immediate steps to establish the cause and start effective therapy.
