Learning Objectives:

  • Learn the evolution of immunotherapy drug development and the pathophysiology of immune related adverse events (iRAE)
  • Understand the timeline of the developement of iRAEs with major immunotherapy treatments how how to triage severity.
  • Perform a comprehensive patient assessment for iRAEs, grading of toxicity and treatment considerations in hospitalized patients.

Dr. Joseph W. McCollom DO obtained his osteopathic degree from Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine in East Lansing, Michigan. He completed his Internal Medicine residency at Metro Health Hospital in west Michigan and completed a fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Care as well as Hematology/Medical Oncology through Wright State University in Dayton Ohio. His passion is integrating the compassionate care of supportive oncology to the competent innovation of disease directed oncology. Dr McCollom has been able to present at the national and state level as well as several award-winning research presentations locally for integration of supportive care into oncology practice. He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Hospice and Palliative Medicine and Medical Oncology He is an active member of the American College of Osteopathic Internists (ACOI), American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), American Association of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM), European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO). Dr McCollom is sub-specializing in gastrointestinal medical oncology (esophageal, gastric, hepatic, small bowel, pancreatic, colonic, rectal cancer) as well as palliative, integrative and survivorship oncology with a primary clinical research focus in this field. His program achieved an international designation from ESMO as an integrated palliative care in oncology center, one of six centers in the United States. He currently serves as co-chair of the ASCO supported Palliative Care in Oncology Community of Practice, a social media editor for the Oncologist and associate faculty for OncoAlert. He lives in northeast Indiana with his wife and two young children. He enjoys endurance sports and has run several half marathons and a triathlon, is active within his church community and relishes time with his family.
