Learning Objectives:
In this session, you'll learn how to:
- Define palliative care in the context of cancer, citing the World Health Organization's official definition.
- Discuss the importance of early integration of palliative care in patients with advanced cancer diagnoses.
- Examine the guidelines and recommendations for integrating palliative care into standard oncology care, as presented by the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network.

Dr. Beckrow completed his undergraduate education at the Lyman Briggs College of Michigan State University (MSU), attended medical school at MSU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine, completed an Internal Medicine internship and residency at Ingham Regional Medical Center and an Oncology Fellowship conducted through MSU and the Great Lakes Cancer Institute at the Breslin Cancer Center in Lansing, Michigan.
Dr. Beckrow is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Hospice & Palliative Medicine. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM), a Fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Internists (FACOI), and is Hospice Medical Director Certified (HMDC). Dr. Beckrow serves as an Associate Medical Director for Caring Circle – Corewell Health in St. Joseph, Michigan, Physician Faculty at Trillium Institute in Grand Rapids, Michigan, is an Assistant Professor for MSU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine, and serves as Medical Director for Hospice and Palliative Medicine at McLaren Greater Lansing. Dr. Beckrow enjoys being involved in many community organizations and is proud to serve on the Board of Education for Lakeshore Public Schools, and as a board member for the Boys and Girls Club of Southwest Michigan. In his spare time, Dr. Beckrow enjoys reading, hiking, and traveling with his wife, Kate, and their family.
