CNS Infections (2026 IMCU)

Learning Objectives:

  • Upon completion, participantswill be able to:
    • recognize the clinical presentations and red flags of bacterial meningitis, viral encephalitis, and cryptococcal meningitis in high-risk populations.
    • apply evidence-based diagnostic algorithms including appropriate use of CT imaging, lumbar puncture, CSF analysis, and advanced molecular testing.
    • prescribe appropriate empiric and pathogen-specific antimicrobial therapy with correct dosing and duration for common CNS infections.

Patrick J. Kenney, D.O., F.A.C.O.I. Vice Chair, Department of Infectious Diseases, Cleveland Clinic Florida has been in clinical practice since 2013. Dr. Kenney completed his internal medicine training at Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, FL and his fellowhip in infectious diseases at Morsani College of Medicine at the University of South Florida in Tampa, FL. He is the newly appointed program director for the Infectious Disease fellowship program at the Cleveland Clinic Florida in Weston, FL. Dr. Kenney cares for patients across all aspects of the specialty in both the inpatient and outpatient setting. He is clinical adjunct faculty at Florida Atlantic University Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine, Ross University College of Medicine, Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine at Nova Southeastern University, and St. George's University College of Medicine. His clincal interests include virology particularly HIV as well as transplant infectious diseases.
